Something stupid that bothers me A lot when I’m wandering around the blogosphere, it’s not worth mentioning, I’m not even sure if it bothers anyone else but me, but damn it IT IS ANNOYING, and you must hear about it I have literaly came across this type of post hundreds of times, it goes like this:
“It is 2:00 am in the morning, and I am very tired, and I don’t know what to write about….”

OR something like:

“Its 3:00 am here and I have work tomorrow, and I’m posting to let you know what am gonna be posting about tomorrow, after I get some rest…”

Tip: If your blog address line does not read ” http://www.cnn.com ” please just go to sleep SILENTLY!

I feel better now.

Move over RedBull The No-Sleeping Pill is here

Ever wished there were more than 24 hour in a day? wish no more the solution is here, and its been here since 7 years ago but for some reason I didn’t hear about it!. Its a stimulant in the form of a pill called “modafinil” - thats not the brand’s name- and what it does is that it makes you no longer feel the need to sleep.

Modafinial is usually prescribed to treat a medical condition that causes excessive daytime sleepiness, but other people have discovered other benefecial uses of it, such as people who are leading very busy lives who don’t have enough time for a full night’s sleep. Just take one before you go to bed and get 4-5 hours or whatever your time permits, and wake up all refreshed and ready to go!! Unlike energy drinks and other caffein type drinks modafinil does not cause sudden drop of energy later on. Neither do you have to make up for the sleeping time you missed on consecutive nights, becasue it is simply not an energy drug, it doesn’t affect your energy nor does your focusing becomes any higher, you just wont feel the need to sleep … -how smart it that!-

NewScientist has an article about the drug, it describes it as “Modafinil is just the first of a wave of new lifestyle drugs that promise to do for sleep what the contraceptive pill did for sex - unshackle it from nature“

I know what I would do if I can get my hands on a prescription - what would you do in your extra awake time? spend more time with your kids? finally have time to excrcise? or beat your friends record of watching 13 movies in a row?

Attention: Shortage in the IT department

You may have heard that Mr. Bill Gates has been hopping around the globe lately. During his visit to Russia last weewk, Mr. Gates gave a 30 minutes speech at the Microsoft Business Forum in Moscow, where he emphasized the fact that there is a shortage in IT professionals.

“Worldwide, a lot of the developed countries are not graduating as many IT students as they were in the past, which is kind of ironic.“

What is really ironic from my point of view is that alot of these students who are graduating from schools in the developed countries are not originally from these developed countries!! I examined this first hand on day to day basis, I am pursuing a graduate degree in a university in the U.S, and throuhgt my years in the school of engineering, the majority of my classmates are not U.S citizens, very few are from Western European countris, and the rest are from India, Korea, China, Latin America, and the Midddle East. the same is also true for professors, so I guess teh problem is not in an early stage.
On a related issue, I recall an article I once read in a magazine three years ago - it was either Newsweek or Time - the article was talking about how in the last 15 or more years - can’t remember exactly- 75% of all Science Nobel Prize winners were Americans, or doing their research in American universities, two thirds of these Americans were originally not U.S citizens!!

Even Europeans are righfully scared by this facty, they sometimes blame it on the sheer larger pool of American scientists to choose from; However I beleive its also due to creative university environment and the the size of the scientific establishment that -in my opinion- is what is fueling the economy ofcourse when you mix in a bit of oil which also comes from the under-developed countries
Speaking of oil, when Gates was in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia recently, he mentioned the importance of education for growing economies, and how Microsoft can be a business partner in this regard, no mentioning of the need for IT professionals or anything. Needless to say he managed to sign a number of pretty penny contracts with major ministries & government agencies!

It all comes down to business ….. but what the heck … Managing businesses is what Americans do best, no wonder when I pass by the school of business on my way to the Metro at Foggy Bottom I feel like I am in the States again!

The Big question remains now: Why in your opinion eventhough we in the so called under-developed countries manage to have our girls & boys get the fanciest degrees in the developed countries universities, and then can never create the right environment to put these minds to work later on ? because we suck in manegement? or because we don’t care since we can buy the technologies later on? or what the hell is going on!

Its not As-Antibacterial As You thought it is !

Have you bought a hand soap or dish washing liquid with the “Antibacterial” or “antimicrobial” labels on on it thinking…yeah these must be the best thing to protect me against germs and bad thigs causing cold and that sort of tsuff?? Well guess what; The American Medical Association has urged the avoidance of antibacterial soaps since 2000; And the American Food & Drug Administration published a study in 2005 saying that such products were no better at stopping illness than products without those ingredients, and experts have warned that overuse of such products could create resistant strains of bacteria. There are also concerns that chemicals in antibacterial soaps are being released into the environment in the form of sewage sludge that ends up on farm fields!!

Is there any end in sight for this crazy story that is getting crazier by the day?? What is most sickening among all this chaos is the Fatwa thing…for the life of me I can’t imagine that a human in his right of mind would still need a FATWA to finally beleive that this should STOP!! How could these people put their brains on hibernation mode and instead take orders from such “Satanic” figures who call themselves “Religeous” ?!!

"Pursuit of Happyness"

Since I love movies based on true stories, and I like Will Smith as an actor, and I enjoy watching/hearing/readin about success stories, I can’t wait to watch the new Sony Pictures movie that is going to be out in theatres this December.

The movie is based on the life of a self made millionair named Chris Gardner, who started life as a single father in San Francisco, who finds himself having to make the decision to either pay his rent or pay for child daycare so he can go to work, so he ends up homeless with his infant son, living in cheap hotel rooms sometimes and some other times in the San Frnacisco train station. The movie goes on portraying his life and how he made it in life starting as a trainee at a stock brokerage firm, and climbing the ladder to the top eventually becoming partner and owner of the chicago based firm.The real Chris Gardner is now busy making interviews with business magazines, appearing on TV shows, and I read somewhere that he might even has his own TV talk show, kinda like The Oprah Show

Not Your Average Physics Professor

Remember Einstein’s famous picture with his hair flying in all directions - a picture that always made me wonder why gravity does not seem to have any visible effects on this gggguy’s hair- ?? That was the picture that comes to mind when somebody mentions a physics professors. Okay that was then, Things had chaned

Time to meet LISA RANDALL Professor of Physics at Harvard University. Same place where this talented scientist earned her BS (1983) and PhD (1987) in physics.
Among a long list of impressive posts on her CV: A President’s Fellow at the University of California at Berkeley, a postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and a junior fellow at Harvard University,first tenured woman in physics at Princeton University, first tenured woman in theorist in science at Harvard and MIT woman and if thats not enough she is THE MOST CITED theoritical physicist in THE WORLD in the last five years!
She is most famous for her theory about wrapped geometry/spacetime which talks about an extra fifth dimension, the theory which found a warm welcom in the String theorist society.

Her book: Warped Passages: Unraveling the Mysteries of The Universe’s Hidden Dimensions in which she introduces her theory to the public in an effort to publicise science was on New York Times 100 Notable Books of the Year 2005. Read Discover magazine’s interview with Randall.

Art meets Science "Cellular Art"

Here is a link to a an eight minute animation movie created for Harvard’s Biology students to illustrate the Inner Life of a Cell. The animation illustrates unseen molecular mechanisms and the ones they trigger, specifically how white blood cells sense and respond to their surroundings and external stimuli.
For those of you interested in the technique, it was created in NewTek LightWave 3D and Adobe After Effects. The Hartford, CT located company who created this XVIVO is a multimedia company specialized in scientefic animation.
An amazing peice of art, that illustrates another amazing work of art!! Now that is MINIMUM entropy to me.
